Living with Perinatal Depression - The Black Dog Institute

As psychologists, we often attend workshops, conferences and talks to keep us informed and up-to-date with the current research and effective treatment practices available in our field. However, rarely do we get the opportunity to listen, ask confronting personal questions and gain subjective feedback from real families about their experience of postnatal depression.

Last Wednesday evening, the Black Dog Institute held a talk for health professionals on “living with perinatal depression”. A panel of 3 mums and 1 dad were interviewed. Each openly shared their personal stories and answered questions about their experience with perinatal depression. This interactive talk allowed the clinicians in the room to gain new insight and a different perspective on postnatal depression (PND). We wanted to share some of the comments and ideas raised in this talk with other mums and families-to-be out there who aren’t so sure how they (or their sisters/friends) are feeling.
